In one sentence — what is a Tanger Ville port transfer?

A Tanger Ville port transfer picks up passengers at the city-centre port (often Tarifa, under 1 h) for a short ride to the medina (~250 m), hotel or station — not Tanger Med (~40–45 km farther).

Warning — your ticket shows the arrival port. Look for “Tanger Ville”, “Tangier City” or “Port of Tangier” — not “Tanger Med”. One word means roughly 40–45 minutes extra road time.

Tanger Ville Port or Tanger Med Port?

This is the Strait traveller’s most common mistake: booking a chauffeur for the wrong port. Both places say “Tangier”, but they are not interchangeable. Your ferry ticket clearly shows the arrival port — read it before you book the vehicle.

Tanger Ville Port is the city port: maritime station downtown, facing the medina and Tanja Marina Bay. It serves the short Tarifa ↔ Tanger Ville route with Baleària and AML. You disembark already “in” Tangier — medina, central hotels, corniche or Al-Boraq station stay very close.

Tanger Med Port, east of the city (~40–45 km), handles the big flows: Algeciras, Motril, Barcelona, Marseille, Genoa… Arriving there without a planned road transfer means a long extra drive before the centre. Some operators (including AML) serve both ports — the brand alone is not enough; only the port printed on the ticket counts.

In practice: if you’re mostly on foot for a medina / centre stay, or heading straight to a nearby hotel, Tanger Ville is the right port. If you arrive with a vehicle, on a long-haul ferry, or from Algeciras into the Med complex, it’s almost always Tanger Med.

Baleària and AML on Tarifa ↔ Tanger Ville

On Tarifa ↔ Tanger Ville, fast ferries run year-round; frequencies rise in summer, on weekends and during Marhaba. The two current operators are Baleària and AML.

• Baleària Spanish operator well established on the Strait. Fast-ferry sailings for foot passengers and, depending on the day, vehicles. Always check the arrival port on your confirmation.
• AML Africa Morocco Link (Morocco, 2016). Operates Tarifa ↔ Tanger Ville and, separately, Algeciras ↔ Tanger Med. Same brand, different ports.

Good to know — schedules and sea conditions shift often. Delays and Strait congestion are common — check the operator’s site on the day and keep buffer for a flight, Al-Boraq or Chefchaouen.

On the Tarifa side: booking and boarding

Tarifa is a compact Andalusian port town. The terminal is near the centre; in peak season parking and queues grow quickly. Book a ticket with a confirmed date and time, especially in July–August.

Boarding — often arrive 60–120 minutes before departure (follow foot / vehicle rules). Keep passport, boarding pass and any visa handy.

Arriving at Tanger Ville: the real path

Once the ferry docks, the flow goes through the modernised maritime station, then towards Avenue Mohammed VI and the marina. Part of the formalities may start on board or finish in the terminal — keep documents accessible.

At the exit the medina is walkable, but luggage, heat or a night arrival make a private transfer far more comfortable — and avoid price haggling.
