The Port of Tanger Med is northern Morocco’s main maritime gateway. About 40–45 km from central Tangier, it welcomes thousands of passengers daily from Spain, France and Italy. Without a pre-booked transfer, leaving the terminal can feel stressful — especially after a crossing, with luggage and family.
At Northy, we handle the full process: ferry tracking, on-time meet & greet at the passenger terminal exit, and a private ride to your destination. This guide covers ferry operators, arrival steps, and exactly how we pick you up — no taxi queue, no price haggling. If your ticket says Tarifa → Tanger Ville (downtown), read our Tanger Ville Port guide instead.
In one sentence — what is a Tanger Med port transfer?
A Tanger Med port transfer is a private ride (~40–45 km / 45–60 min to the centre) from the passenger terminal exit to Tangier, your hotel or another city — with ferry tracking and a licensed Northy tourist vehicle.
Ferry companies serving Tanger Med
Several operators connect Europe to Tanger Med. Schedules shift by season (Marhaba, weekends, summer) — always confirm your ticket before travel.
- AML (Africa Morocco Link) Daily sailings between Tanger Med and Algeciras — one of the busiest Strait crossings.
- Baleària Routes to Algeciras and Motril (Andalusia), ideal for reaching southern Spain.
- FRS / DFDS Frequent crossings to Algeciras, popular with both foot passengers and cars.
- Naviera Armas Also operates on the Algeciras – Tanger Med route alongside other Strait operators.
- GNV (Grandi Navi Veloci) Long-distance ferries to Barcelona, Sète (France) and Genoa (Italy).
- La Méridionale Regular service between Tanger Med and Marseille — a comfortable option for departures from southern France.
Arriving at Tanger Med: what actually happens
According to official Tanger Med Passengers guidance, passports are stamped on board during the crossing. On arrival, the flow depends on how you travel.
Foot passengers (the usual case for a private transfer)
- Police check when leaving the ferry (passports already stamped on board).
- Intra-port bus: a shuttle takes you from the disembarkation area to the maritime station / passenger terminal.
- Customs & luggage: baggage control inside the terminal.
- Terminal exit: you have entered Morocco — this is where Northy meets you.
Tip: don’t wander the car park looking for a random taxi. Stay visible at the passenger exit; your Northy chauffeur meets you there with a name sign.
How Northy picks you up (we handle everything)
Send us your ferry company + date + arrival time (and booking reference if you have it). Then:
- We track your arrival — ferry delays included, so we’re there on time.
- We wait at the passenger terminal exit — after the port shuttle and customs, not on the ship quayside.
- Meet & greet + luggage help — child seats on request, water on board.
- Immediate departure to Tangier city, your hotel, or another Moroccan city.
In short: leave the ship → bus to the terminal & customs → you exit → we’re there. No parking hunt, no fare negotiation.
Vehicles available from Tanger Med

- Coach — 35 seats For clubs, seminars, organised groups or school trips. Professional driver, timed to your ferry.

Popular destinations from Tanger Med Port
The port is not “in town”: a private transfer avoids random connections and late-night waiting.
- Tangier city About 45–60 minutes depending on traffic. Medina, Malabata, city centre, Tangier Ville station or your riad — door to door.
- Chefchaouen Direct to the blue pearl of the Rif (about 2–2.5 hours). Ideal straight off the ferry, no forced overnight in Tangier.
- Tetouan To Tetouan, Tamuda Bay or Cabo Negro — a smooth option for northern coastal stays.
- Casablanca Comfortable long-distance transfer to Casa, Mohammed V Airport or your business hotel.
- Marrakech Direct link to Marrakech after the crossing — suitable vehicle, rest stops possible on the motorway.
Departing from Tanger Med (the other way)
For Europe-bound sailings, checks (tickets, police, customs) for foot passengers happen inside the maritime station, then an intra-port shuttle takes you to boarding. We drop you at the Tanger Med Port Center / passenger terminal entrance with a comfortable buffer (often 2–3 hours before sailing, depending on the operator).
In peak season (Marhaba), the port may restrict access to travellers with a confirmed ticket including date and time. Book your ferry early and allow extra time.
Why book a private transfer instead of a random taxi?
- Fixed price agreed before the ride — no surprises on arrival.
- A driver who knows the terminal exit / parking / motorway flow.
- The right vehicle (Vito, Sprinter or coach) for your group.
- Ferry delay monitoring — we wait; you don’t pay pointless waiting games.
- Option to combine with a private taxi in Tangier or a tour the next day.

Where exactly does Northy meet me at Tanger Med?
At the passenger terminal exit, after the intra-port shuttle and customs. Not on the ship quay: foot passengers must go through the maritime station first.

Yes. Pickup from your hotel or address in Tangier (or another city), drop-off at the passenger terminal with enough time before boarding.
